Neil Young’s Experience with Feldenkrais

Neil Young bookOne of the most unique aspects of the Feldenkrais Method is that we work with the whole person.  Unlike most approaches, the place that hurts is not the “problem.”  Rather we study how someone moves in their daily life (e.g. walking, sitting, and standing) and then help them learn to do those activities without putting unnecessary strain on their bodies.

Neil Young (the musician in Cosby, Stills, Nash, and Young) captures this well in his memoir “Waging Heavy Peace”:

For a year or more, I stopped walking because my feet were hurting. At a doctor’s advice, I tried wearing special inserts in my shoes, but they threw off my balance. Eventually I learned from…a Feldenkrais practitioner…that bad posture was putting a lot of strain on my feet. It’s amazing what you can learn when you step outside the realm of people who are selling you something and into the realm of people who treat the body, not the symptom.”  — Neil Young
